Sugar Cookies

For any holiday or for just about any reason at all – these are my go-to sugar cookie. They have a wonderful flavor that makes everyone happy. At Christmas it becomes a family fun time for Nana to make cookies with the Grandkids. They can make some pretty silly cookies.

Roll Sugar Cookies

3/4 cup Butter – soft

1/4 cup Shortening

1 1/2 cup Powdered Sugar

1 Egg

3/4 tsp Vanilla

3/4 tsp Almond Extract

2 1/2 cups Flour

1 tsp Soda

1 tsp Cream of Tartar

Mix butter, shortening, and sugar. Add egg, vanilla and almond extract. Blend well. In separate bowl, combine the flour, soda and Tartar. Mix dry ingredients into butter mixture and blend well. Chill for a few hours.

Preheat oven to 375 degrees

Roll out dough on a lightly floured cloth covered board or pastry mat. Roll to 1/4 inch thick. Cut and place cookies on a parchment paper lined sheet. Bake for 7 to 8 minutes until edges just turn light brown.

If you do not plan to frost these cookies you can sprinkle them with sugar before you bake them.

Vanilla Butter Cream Frosting

1/3 cup Butter – soft

3 cups Powdered Sugar

1 1/2 tsp Vanilla

Approximately 1/4 cup cream

Blend butter and powdered sugar. Beat in vanilla and enough cream to be smooth. You can also add food coloring. Frost cooled cookies and enjoy!

This recipe makes 24 – 3 inch cookies, and the frosting is more than enough to frost more than that. Works great to split into multiple colors and is super for holding sprinkles.
